The 19th Anniversary Dinner - Social Entrepreneurs as a Force of Change
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
Sheraton Gateway Hotel, Burlingame, CA
Mr. Wilford Welch, author of Tactics of Hope: How Social Entrepreneurs are Changing Our World will be the keynote speaker at our 19th Anniversary Dinner. His talk will be: "What Social Entrepreneurs Have to Teach Business."
Welch writes about a dramatic shift occurring today in human consciousness regarding our social and environmental actions on earth, and the increasing recognition that our current practices are not sustainable. But an emerging group of people he calls “social entrepreneurs” are using new technologies, business methods, and a lot of determination to overcome age-old social and environmental challenges. His book is a guide for individuals around the world who are concerned about global issues such as poverty, social justice, and environmental sustainability, but who are not clear what steps they should take to move from concern to effective action.
Come learn why social entrepreneurs are part of the fastest-growing grassroots movement in human history and why there has never been a better time for you to get involved, too.
Watch this "Tactics of Hope" video for a sneak preview of Wilfred Welch's message.
About the Speakers
Wilford Welch, a former U.S. diplomat, lawyer, and international business strategy consultant, has taught for the Yale-China program in Hong Kong, received his law degree from U.C. Berkeley (Boalt Hall) with a focus on the Chinese legal system, and was an assistant to William P. Bundy and Marshall Green in the East Asian Bureau of the U.S. Department of State. He is also a co-founder, with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Desmond Tutu, of the Quest for Global Healing Initiative, which brings together people from around the world every other year to help transform their concerns over environmental and social challenges into concrete initiatives.
Welch will be joined on the podium by David Hopkins, a 2007 Middlebury College graduate who was the contributing editor for the book. While at Middlebury, Hopkins served as Director of the International Affairs Center of the Roosevelt Institution, the nation's first student think-tank devoted to progressive policy reform. He is a regular writer for the Skoll Foundation's Social Edge blog, and is a founding director of BeRewarding.com, an incentive-based education website that generates donations to leading social and environmental nonprofit organizations.
